Caldhu Cottage underwent an extensive 2.5 year, eco-friendly renovation by its current owners during 2020 - 2022.
Stripped back to its four walls, the cottage was sympathetically restored with traditional materials but to modern day standards and now provides a beautiful & unique holiday home in which to relax after a day out in the hills.

A brief overview of the major works undertaken during the renovation includes:
-
Failing sand-cement render removed and the beautiful St Bees Red Sandstone repaired, cleaned and repointed with traditional "hot lime" mortar.
-
Kitchen, conservatory and rear of the cottage re-rendered with hot lime render.
-
New sandstone lintels and cills installed on many of the windows to replace ugly concrete ones.
-
uPVC windows replaced with high quality, locally-produced, wooden, Georgian-style, double-glazed windows.
-
Front door replaced with a unique, reclaimed and restored, hand-carved, oak door. High performance double glazed doors installed at the rear, opening on to a delightful patio area overlooking the walled garden. Stable door installed in the kitchen.
-
Internally the walls have been stripped and replastered with insulating lime-hemp plaster to not only make the cottage warm, dry and cosy but to retain the character of the uneven walls.
-
Concrete floor slabs replaced with foamed glass insulation topped with limecrete, incorporating underfloor heating fed by the latest in environmentally-friendly technology, a ground source heat pump. Floors have been finished with oak and limestone flags.
-
Rewired and replumbed with a new and efficient sewage treatment plant replacing the '60s septic tank.
-
Traditional lime "parging" retained in the roof; loft insulated with cosy and environmentally friendly sheep's wool.
-
Kitchen roof replaced and re-slated with original, reclaimed Lakeland slate, also used on the new porch.
-
Bathroom roof completely replaced with new EPDM roof. Plastic cladding stripped and re-rendered.
-
New kitchen and bathroom
-
External joinery refurbished or replaced as required.
-
Chimney stacks repaired and a flue line installed for the log burner.
-
French drains installed in the gardens to improve drainage and a wild-flower meadow has been sewn in the walled garden.
